Lore & Background
The Avernum series is set in Avernum, a subterranean nation. The surface is ruled by the Empire, which exiles anyone who speaks out, misbehaves, or does not fit in. When someone from Avernum assassinates the cruel Emperor, the Empire takes revenge by invading Avernum. At the same time, magical barriers appear and block both sides from access to various cities. The story is standalone but builds on the previous game's story.
Gameplay involves controlling a group of up to four adventurers, each customizable via a skill tree. The game features an open world for exploration and many side quests. Combat is turn-based and tactical. Jeff Vogel updated the quests, dialogue, and dungeons for this remake, in some cases completely rewriting them or adding new options.
