Alone in the Dark (2024 video game)

Alone in the Dark is a 2024 survival horror game from developer Pieces Interactive and publisher THQ Nordic. This entry reimagines the 1992 original and marks the seventh title in the series. Set in the 1930s, the single-player story lets players choose between private investigator Edward Carnby (voiced by David Harbour) or Emily Hartwood (voiced by Jodie Comer) as they explore Derceto Mansion to solve its mysteries. The game launched on 20 March 2024 for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. Critics gave it mixed reviews, and it did not meet sales expectations set by THQ Nordic's parent company Embracer Group, leading to Pieces Interactive's closure in June 2024.

Gameplay uses an over-the-shoulder third-person perspective, abandoning the original's fixed camera angles—a style similar to recent Resident Evil remakes. Players fight enemies with firearms, melee weapons, and throwable objects, and can also use environmental hazards. The mansion is stocked with items like ammo, keys, and collectibles such as journals, letters, and lagniappes that reveal hidden story details. Each character's campaign features unique cutscenes and levels.

The plot takes place in 1930s Louisiana. Edward accompanies Emily to Derceto Manor, a remote sanatorium, after she receives a disturbing letter from her missing uncle, Jeremy Hartwood—a once-renowned artist treated there. Upon arrival, they find Jeremy gone and the manor unsettled. Searching for him, they uncover a secret voodoo-influenced cult operating within the institution. Their investigation leads through hidden passages and into nightmarish alternate realities accessed via Jeremy's talisman. These twisted realms reflect Jeremy's deteriorating mind and are filled with monstrous creatures. They also encounter a masked entity called the Dark Man.

Edward wrestles with guilt over Grace Saunders, a young resident he failed to protect on a prior case, while Emily confronts grief over her husband's death in World War I. The investigation reveals Jeremy made a pact with the Dark Man for forbidden knowledge and artistic inspiration, trapping fragments of his consciousness in a submerged dream-temple. After a battle with a monstrous creature—defeated by stabbing it in the left eye—it is revealed to be Jeremy in the real world, leaving him lobotomized.
